What is an online course?
A fully online course is one that is delivered using the Internet. You will read class materials, submit assignments, take quizzes, and interact with your instructor and fellow students using your computer. This means that you can study from the comfort of your own home and at a time of day that is convenient for you.

How much time does an online course require?
Online courses require as much or more time as “traditional” courses. Even though you won’t have to attend class sessions (typically three hours a week), plan on spending about as much time reading, viewing course materials, and participating in online discussions. Additionally, you will have assignments to complete as you would in a “traditional” course. This requires that you pace yourself, as these courses still have deadlines for completing assignments, participating in discussions, and taking tests.

What computer skills do I need?
You should be familiar with the operating system that is on your computer and know how to save and find files. You should also be able to use a word processing program, read and send e-mail, and use a web browser to access web sites.

What kind of computer do I need?

  • You will need an updated computer with access to the Internet. We recommend high-speed Internet access such as DSL, wireless, or a cable modem, especially for courses that incorporate multimedia such as streaming video. For many courses, a 56K modem will work, though it will be extremely slow and some multimedia may not be viewable.
  • A web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox
  • A word processing program such as Microsoft Word (Although, you can use any word processing program that can save files as a Rich Text Format.)
  • Some courses may require special plug-ins or software; the instructor will make you aware of these at the beginning of the course.
